F. Matthias Alexander (1869-1955) was the developer of The Alexander Technique.

As a young man, he was a Shakespearean actor, and he found himself increasingly losing his voice on stage. When he was unable to find medical help after intensive searching, he began observing what he was doing in his own use that could be causing his condition. Years of observation led to his discoveries and the method by which not only he, but thousands of others, have obtained life-changing benefits.

He wrote about his work in four books and established a course in London to train teachers in his unique method. Today, STAT(England) and AmSAT(U.S.A.) societies, among other related societies world-wide, endeavor to preserve and disseminate the principles of his teachings. The three-year, sixteen hundred hour AmSAT courses, with a maximum five-to-one student/teacher ratio, are similar to the format of his training course.
